Self-Portraits

Back in art school, they always told us that the self is the most available model you’ll ever have. The idea was simple: if you can actually learn to look deep into your own face, you’ll be that much better at observing everyone else. So, I started using myself. I practiced on me.

Over time, I learned to look at my inner self, too, to really pay attention to my own thoughts and feelings. I got pretty detailed with it, maybe a little too self-aware at times.

When I look back at these portraits now, I see a record of how I was feeling and who I was at that moment. They’re a history of the quality time I’ve spent with myself. I think that was the point all along: learning how to be with me, so I could eventually be better at spending quality time with everyone else.
